Minor Project 30: blog
1. Krug's First Law of Usability
This taught me that when designing for the web, you need to make sure that everything on your web page is laid out as simple as you can make it. The point of having information on the internet is to get it all across to the user, and this information needs to be managed in a neat and orderly fashion. Thinking should not even be an option for the user when they enter your website. The easier it is to navigate, the better overall experience the user will have.
2. Scanning
I've learned that scanning is when the user chooses to simply scan over a webpage rather then read every word that is written on it. They look for key words and phrases that might catch their eye. If they come across something that might be more interesting, then a more detailed look at the text may come. People may do this because they are in a hurry, or they simply know that not everything on a webpage may be completely vital to finding the information that they seek for.
3. Sacrificing
Sacrificing is when the user will choose the first option, which may be the easiest, but not the best one available. Again, a cause for this could be users are in a hurry, and not much wrong could come out of not picking the absolute best option. The option to go back ad pick a different route will always be available, so it is reassuring that going a certain way will get the same result as going a different way.
4. Designing for Scanning and not reading
I learned that you can make a simple visual hierarchy and to make things very easy to navigate and as simple as possible. Making the webpage simple and easy to navigate is also very important for the user who is just scanning. If the site is too cluttered with information, they might not know what is important to look at at and scanning will become very difficult. Breaking the page up in different sections is also vital to the user for an easy going browsing experience.
5.Users like mindless choices
Users like mindless choices because it is simply the easiest option for them to think about. When on the internet, users visit websites for information that they are interested in. They don't want to have to try and figure out how to get that information, they just want it as easy as possible. So designing a website with the fact in mind that people want to make mindless choices is very vital in the designing process.
6. How to shorten text for the Web
I've learned how to cut down long paragraphs for a shorter and easier experience to read for the web.
7. Trunk Test
I've learned how to give a basic trunk test to a website, locating all of the important parts of a website. These include the header, body text, navigation, and footer.
8. Web Design 101
Making sure you know your design answers the following questions: What's the point of this site?
Do you know where to start?
9. Peer feedback
Getting feedback from your peers can be vital to any design, as they are a great outside source to critique your designs.
10. Keep it simple
Making the homepage simple is very important, as having a very busy one may drive people away from the site. Keeping the page simple and easy to use is a great way for any user to start with on a webpage.

The usability test went very well with my roommates. They were all able to easily find all of the key parts of the website, including the header/logo, navigation, main content, and footer. After this test I feel confident that the majority of people will be able to find the same things with the same amount of ease.

Minor Project 16: Project Brief for Client Prof. Brian Noell
The Core Creative Concept
This website is going to be designed based off of the course theme that Professor Noel has chosen, which relates to the Civil War. It will be a home for all of the class, so they can share and view each others work. Each page on the website will have its on navigation bar on the side, along with the main navigation bar on the top.
The Overall Look and Feel
The look of this website will definitely be catered to the overall theme of the class, which coincides with the Civil War. I've decided to go with lighters colors, such as tan to help fit the feel of the theme.
Purpose & Objectives
The main purpose for this website is to give students a place to display their work to one another, and have it as a main home for the class.
Information Architecture
The website will mainly be navigated by two navigation bars. There will be a main navigation bar that displays on all pages, and a side navigation bar that pertains to each individual page.
Audience
The main audience for this website will consist of the students of Professor Noel's english 102 class.
Design Visuals & Hierarchy
I think for this website, overall the typeface will be one that is fairly simple and clean. Something like Helvetica or Times New Roman would probably fit just fine with the classic and historic feel that describes the theme of this class.
Schedule for Implementation
October 26 - Brief and site map completed
November 2 - Final designs completed

Scanning is when the user chooses to simply look over a website for key words or terms that catch their eye or interests. Users usually scan when they are looking for a specific thing or certain amount of information. Most of the time they can be in a hurry, so scanning can be the quickest and most efficient method for finding exactly what they need to find in the shortest amount of time. Basically, it blocks out all other information then what you are looking for.
Satisficing is when the user chooses the first reasonable option instead of the absolute best one. This is definitely common in scanning, because while scanning the user is usually in a hurry and is only looking for any type of possible answer. So when they see the first one, it tends to just be good enough.

Two ways to design a web page for scanning and not reading are making a simple visual hierarchy and to make things very easy to navigate and as simple as possible.
A simple visual hierarchy is important because if the user is only scanning the website, they need to know what is important information and what is secondary information. For example, the more important things might be bigger or bolder, and the less important info might be smaller or more in the background.
Making the webpage simple and easy to navigate is also very important for the user who is just scanning. If the site is too cluttered with information, they might not know what is important to look at at and scanning will become very difficult. Breaking the page up in different sections is also vital to the user for an easy going browsing experience.

Classic Care Brief
Tracy Van Oss, Classic Care, LLC Website Brief

October 5, 2011
- The Core Creative Concept
The concept of this site is to advertise Professor Van Oss’s website for her company in which she specializes in injury prevention from babies to the older generation who may need some extra care. While she does not intend on her business growing too much in the near future due to her teaching profession and family, she would like her clients to be able to research her before hand and make their experience easier and more manageable. This website also will be able to keep her current clients up to date with upcoming safety programs and new releases of home care technology.
The site will be very informational, but will include the least amount of reading material as possible. Pictures of clients using the tools Professor Van Oss provides them with will be used all over the site so her viewers will actually be able to visualize what she does. There will be about five or six navigation buttons with drop down menus for some, as they may include more information in that specific subject. A footer will be at the bottom of every page of the website to ensure the prospective or current client never needs to go out of their way to look for it if they need it.
- The over-all look & feel or personality
As her colors are white and navy, we will stick to that original color scheme as well as a light purple to bring another colorful aspect to the site. Because her clientele is targeted at an older generation (parents to the elderly) and due to the nature of her business, bright colors are not necessarily needed. The homepage will feature the name of her and her business at the top, while the navigation bar will be on the left side and a slide show of pictures on the right. Her contact information will be the footer. The home page, as well as the rest of the site, will be very casual with a modern touch. Pictures will be on every page, maybe more than one on each so get a visual perspective.
- Purpose and objectives
The purpose is to inform clients with the information they need, as well as other information they possibly may have just stumbled upon while looking through the site. We want her clients to be able to use this site with as much ease as possible without overloading it too much with reading material.
We also want to include Classic Care’s brief survey that Professor Van Oss usually gives to customers at the end of the completion of work at a particular residence. She usually gives it as a hard copy, but this way, customers can go online and complete the short survey with ease and complete confidentiality.
- Information Architecture
The navigation bar or buttons would all be to the left of the screen. There should only be about five or six main tabs, but on some there will be drop down menus. Most pages will include some pictures along with the information provided to go with that tab. A different page would be the events page, which would be a big calendar with the name of the event on the day. However, when you scroll over the event day, a brief summary of what is it, where, and when it is happening. This way, the viewer never has to actually click anything.
- Audience
Our target audience will be parents or that age generation. Sometimes parents need help baby proofing their house, especially if they are first time parents. Even if they are not parents, some may need help caring for their own parents, ensuring they are safe in their own home, as Professor Van Oss told us 95% of senior citizens would prefer to. Instead of trying to figure it out on their own and possibly not install a product the right way, or buying the right one completely, a person can look up Professor Van Oss’s company and contact information so she can do that for them.
- Comment on your plans for typography, and other important qualities of the design, layout and visual hierarchy, outline a schedule for implementation.
I believe, because of our target audience, we probably should stick to a simple font like some version of sans serif. This way it is not too different for the reader and they can concentrate on the information they are looking for, rather than distracting texts or colors.
As for visual hierarchy, I would like the first thing to catch the viewers’ eye to be pictures. Even though they are interested in the information being provided to them, I want them to actually visualize themselves or their children or parent being protected like the other people in the photos.
I would like to keep the homepage pretty simple, with just the navigation bar, main pictures, and footer with contact information. From there, the rest of the information can be distributed accordingly to the navigation buttons. I also do not want the website to look square and angular, I like to keep it rounded and casual.
Include a reference or link to a web site design that you admire and may use a model of good design.

Krug's First Law of Usability
Krug's First Law of Usability is, "Don't Make Me Think." Basically this means when designing for the web, you need to make sure that everything on your web page is laid out as simple as you can make it. The point of having information on the internet is to get it all across to the user, and this information needs to be managed in a neat and orderly fashion. Thinking should not even be an option for the user when they enter your website. The easier it is to navigate, the better overall experience the user will have.

If it is short, it’s more likely to be used
An interface is the basic relationship between a computer and the user, and the point of interaction where the two entities meet.
Interactive design is the basic experience a user can have on any device. An example of an interface can be seen in any type of operating system that you can find on type of device. These interfaces are created to help the user have an easy way to navigate through the computer, and use it to the best of it's ability.
Information architecture is how the information on a web page is chosen to be shown to the user. The main goal here is to help the user find whatever they are looking for as easy as possible by organizing everything in a clean and simple matter.
Krug defines usability as, "making sure something works well, and that a person of average ability or experience can use it for its intended purpose without getting hopelessly frustrated."

CAS International Working Group Brief
The purpose of this website is to create a place online for everything that consists of the Quinnipiac International program. Since there is no physical building on campus, a strong web-based home is very necessary to expand the program and inform people of all of its features.
Since the overall website is going to be very information heavy, I feel that the site should not be too graphically busy. If everything is a little less complicated, it could make all of the important information that needs to get across to the user a whole lot easier to read. If the site does end up going inside the MYQ portal page, all colors and design will be kept true to the MYQ format. MYQ is a very easy website to navigate, and any page connected with that should feel the same.
The primary audience for this website would be geared toward current and incoming students who want to learn more about what Quinnipiac has to offer. The international programs are just one of many great features we have, and should be fully showcased for everyone to learn about. After all, this program could be exactly what an incoming student is looking for in a school, and alter their final decision whether to come to Quinnipiac or not.
The main tabs that will be used to navigate the site should include the home page, an events calender, international students/faculty, media, research and scholarship, foreign language resources, and all things international.
A web site that i like to look at as well designed is absolutepunk.net. Everything is laid out very nicely and easy to read.

The main tabs that will be used to navigate the site should include the home page, an events calender, international students/faculty, media, research and scholarship, foreign language resources, and all things international.
A web site that i like to look at as well designed is absolutepunk.net. Everything is laid out very nicely and easy to read.
